“You Need to Get on This!” Part 1: Which Social Media Networks are Right for You?

“You need to get on Twitter!”
“You need to get on Facebook!”
“You need to get on Google Plus!”
“You need to get on (insert new and popular social media network here)!”
Raise your hand if you hear this nearly every day of your life. As a business owner in this digital age, you are fully aware that you need to be engaged in some form of social media. There’s no question there. The question is, which one is right for your business? Here are some things to consider…

Most popular does not equal best – It is as simple as that. It kind of like when your mom used to ask you if your friends were jumping off the top of the Empire State Building, would you do it to. Just because everyone else is “doing it” doesn’t mean that it is a good business/marketing decision for you.

Know what you’re planning to do with it – Are you just pushing out information to the masses or are you looking to spark conversation? What level of “community” are you trying to build?

Who is your audience and where do they “live?” – On networks do the majority of your potential customers and industry connections hang out? You need to be where they are!

It’s quite possible you will initially try multiple networks until you find the right mix of audience engagement and personal comfort level. It’s fine to cast your net a bit wide and see what comes back as that will help you build your overall strategy.
This is just scratching the surface of finding the right social media networks for your business. Stay tuned as we will explore more ways of creating an engagement strategy that works for you.
