Business Blogging – Part 3: Optimizing Your Content

Now that you have some ideas of what types of posts to write, you need to make sure that the post content will grab the visitors’ attention, rank well in search engines, and directly impact your lead generation efforts. In other words, your content needs to be optimized. It’s not just about what is written. It’s about how it’s written, too.
Hopping Headlines – Start with an eye-catching, action-inducing headline. Create a sense of urgency or curiosity. Make the visitor want to click and read more. Be simple and direct, but it doesn’t hurt to “tease” a bit. Using phrases like “How to” or “How not to” are great attention-getters for those seeking information. Make what comes after those phrases dynamic.
Entertain as You Inform – Who says your post about end of the month account reconciliation has to be boring? Punch your post up with colorful and creative language. Put familiar spins on technical jargon. Use humorous or thought-provoking metaphors. Find quotes or photos that put readers at ease (or on edge if that’s the desired reaction).
Choose Your Words – Think about what keywords would be used to search for your business on the web. Think about industry words related to your business. When and where you can, use those words in your posts. You may even link those words to relevant pages on your website, such as services or case studies or testimonials.
Make it POP! – As stated above, how you write the post is just as important as what it says. Don’t drone on and on in long paragraphs. Keep it short and simple…350 words (or less) is a good length. Use numbered or bulleted lists to make key points stand out. If more explanation is needed, use short, titled paragraphs (like in this very post). Use bold type on calls-to-action or things you want your visitors to take away with them.
Evoke a Response – You don’t want your visitors to just read and walk away, right? Get them to do something! End the post with an offer for your current services. Invite them to contact you for more insight. Spark a conversation by asking a question they can answer as a comment to the post.
Now we’re cooking, right! But wait… there’s more! Connecting with your content continues… stay tuned!
